When purchasing a truck scale, one of the most important factors is pricing. Depending on materials and design, truck scale prices can vary. More expensive models are typically designed to last longer through features that prevent downtime and component failure, which saves on repair costs. Overtime, this can lead to a lower cost of ownership than maintaining or replacing truck scale models that seemed like bargains.

Quality scales can outlast other designs by decades. Truck scales can function for 25 years or more, and finding a scale that lasts with minimum maintenance is more cost-effective over its lifespan. Diagnostic junction boxes can also assist in prolonging scale life. By monitoring the output of load cells, diagnostic junction boxes can identify irregularities in calculations which may signal load cells need maintenance or replacement.
Self-checking mounts reduce maintenance by minimizing strain from scale movement. Many scales rely on check rods or bumper bolts, but these put more strain on the scale, resulting in higher maintenance costs. Self-checking mounts remove the need for check rods or bumper bolts while still centering the scale.

Electrical Component Lightning and Transient Protection
It’s not just the exterior that matters. Protection methods for wiring and interior parts can improve scale quality. Some manufacturers provide lightning and transient protection packages that include the following:
- DC transient protection boards in junction boxes
- Copper transient bypass cables for load cells
- DC transient protection in the homerun cable to the indicator
- Single-point grounding
- Bare ground conductor cable buried in the ground from the scale frame to the AC power ground lug
- Uninterrupted power supply or a surge protector in the AC line before reaching the indicator
Proper lightning protection prevents sudden scale failure and emergency repairs. Research manufacturers and discuss with your scale distributor to find a scale with the necessary protections. Reputable manufacturers and distributors will want to ensure your truck scale survives as long as possible, even in the harshest conditions.
Preventative Maintenance for Truck Scales
No matter how the scale is designed, preventative maintenance is essential to keep it functioning properly. Preventative maintenance maximizes scale life, performance and accuracy. Depending on the level of site activity and the material being weighed, maintenance frequency varies. Typically, inspections are recommended one to two times per year. However, more frequent maintenance may be required depending on usage and material being weighed.
A comprehensive maintenance program consists of inspecting the weighbridge, foundation, load cells, junction box and grounding. It also includes performing routine calibration and testing. Discuss with your truck scale distributor to find the right process for your scale.
